We all know those historic, legendary rounds of golf that have been played at Augusta National during The Masters: Jack in ’86, Bubba in 2010, Tiger in 2019. But Augusta is, of course, a functioning country club the rest of the year, which means that The Masters are just a tiny sliver of the total amount of golf played on that perfect course every year.
This is the story of the craziest round of golf in the history of that fabled course. It involved the President, a whole lot of secret service, and seven hostages.
Here’s an excerpt:
In the pro shop, the phone rang. Harris answered.
“This is the president of the United States,” Reagan said. “This is Ronald Reagan. I understand you want to talk to me.”
But the connection was so spotty, and the call’s quality so poor, the technology so primitive, that Harris could hardly make out the words.
“If you are hearing me, won’t you tell me what you want?” Reagan said.
